I understand what this soldier is going through. A while back, there was a neighborhood I wanted to move to. I knew it was a really bad and violent area but I moved there anyway.
After some time, the environment started getting to me. Instead of directing my anger toward those responsible for making it a bad area--or even fighting anyone who could fight back-- I started strangling defenseless babies.
Their mothers were too poor to feed them anyway, so I was doing them a favor. Besides, I can't really be held responsible for my own actions--the violence of the neighborhood messed with my head. Sure, I went there of my own accord and no, no one else there resorted to strangling babies but come on! Living in harsh environments fucks with your mind. That excuses it, right?

The marine is a disgrace to his uniform. I know members of the military and government in more high-stress positions, I guarantee, than those men whom some [above posters] would excuse on the basis of "war stress" -- and yet, NO ONE I know would commit such cruelty to animals.

If the excuse-for-a-human-shown in the video was indeed trying to put the dog out of his misery, he would have shown some degree of respect for the dog, such as a moment of silence or pat on the head. Indeed, the impact of a fall may have saved the dog from further suffering. However, attempting to trebuchet the dog with one's arm, causing it to yelp in fear before it hits the ground, and thereafter laughing about it, is a deplorable act. Furthermore, if the man's apology were sincere, rather than merely an attempt to save face among those who know him and his connection to the video, he would not have used the horrific phrase, "being creative."

My background: University student, not even a member of PETA. I would hope for those of you that condone these actions, that you obtain some modicum of decency in your life. You may not be found worthy of grace, in the end- but at least your headstone might contain something more than deprecations.

1) The dog isn't thrown miles. The soldiers are on a cliff. Heard of visual perspective? IT HAPPENED.

2) Who, do you propose, was the one to obtain a fake puppy, and to edit and compile a video? These two persons are actually in Iraq. IT HAPPENED.

3) This is terrible to say, but, in terms of physics, if a puppy were thrown... Puppies have a lot of loose skin by which their bodies would move around when swung by a hand. That loose skin is how the mother dogs are able to move their young. IT HAPPENED.

4) Note that in response to the puppy's yelping as it flies through the air, another dog starts barking in the distance. Quite a realistic occurrence for a fake video, isn't it? IT HAPPENED.

The video is not fake. It is real, and it is wrong.
